Voices in the Wind

About My Research

I specialize exclusively in First Nation, Métis, and Indigenous-line ancestry, offering detailed genealogy and historical research for individuals, families, and organizations. My work often involves transcribing historical records, translating French documents when needed, and organizing everything into a clear Proof Sheet. A Pedigree Chart is included in Stage One, along with the initial documentation of sources and the upload of relevant material into Dropbox.

Each project is unique, and the amount of research required varies significantly from one family to another. To build an accurate and meaningful picture, I consult a wide range of primary and secondary sources, such as vital statistics, Hudson’s Bay Company records, Métis lists, Indian Affairs treaty annuity paylists, Métis Scrip records, petitions, government correspondence, enfranchisement and treaty discharge documents, and many other historical materials. When necessary, I also contact agencies and archives, including the Truth and Reconciliation Commission for residential school information, as well as local museums, libraries, and community repositories. I often include regional social history to provide cultural context and support the findings.

People come to me for various reasons: some are applying for First Nation Status or Métis Citizenship; others want to identify the specific First Nation, community, or Band connected to their ancestry; and many are simply curious about whether a particular surname or family line traces back to Indigenous ancestors.

My approach goes beyond building a basic family tree. I aim to create a fuller picture of a family’s history by including historical background, cultural context, and any relevant materials that support the ancestral narrative. Even in early stages, I provide clients with both documentation and context that help strengthen their understanding of their lineage.
